VOX is the Latin term for voice.
VOX Detroit exists to champion all things voice — producing, presenting, and developing the vocal arts in Detroit. We create professional performance opportunities for Detroit-based artists, bring canonical and boundary-pushing repertoire to our audiences, and build the infrastructure that keeps extraordinary talent rooted in the city that shaped them.
Our Team
Christine Goerke / Founder and artistic director
Christine Goerke is an artistic leader, producer, and internationally acclaimed soprano dedicated to building bold, voice-centered experiences that connect artists and audiences in meaningful ways. She is the Founder and Artistic Director of VOX Detroit, a new nonprofit organization focused on presenting opera, concert work, and cross-genre programming entered on the human voice. Through VOX, she is developing innovative, community-driven performances that balance grand opera traditions with fresh, accessible formats.
In addition to her work with VOX Detroit, Goerke serves as Artistic Producer for Detroit’s Classic Opera Series at Music Hall and is on the voice faculty at the University of Michigan. Her leadership reflects a commitment to artistic excellence, collaboration, and sustainable models for the future of the art form.
A celebrated dramatic soprano, she has appeared on the world’s leading stages, bringing depth and intensity to some of opera’s most iconic roles.
Matthew Principe / Executive Director and Creative Strategist
Matthew Principe is an internationally recognized producer, strategist, and arts innovator. His work includes collaborations with the Metropolitan Opera, Detroit Opera, The Philadelphia Orchestra, The Apollo, Santa Fe Opera, and Boston Baroque.
As founder of Principe Dynamics, he bridges historical performance with contemporary storytelling, and advances sustainable models for new works and artist-centered practices, positioning the arts as a living, socially resonant force in the 21st century.
Equally adept in several mediums, he has produced award-winning short films (Monsura is Waiting, Stag), theater (Candy & Dorothy), and livestreams and Live in HD transmissions. This season, projects include Producer of two audio recordings of art song and opera, and Cultural Partnerships Producer for the documentary film VIVA VERDI!, featuring the Oscar-nominated song “Sweet Dreams of Joy.”
